Bios:
  • Dennis Taylor
  • Dennis Taylor is the Director of NASA SEWP Security Center. Dennis has more than 25 years experience in nearly all facets of information systems. His previous position was as Chief Architect with a contractor on a major government outsourcing effort. Dennis has several vendor technical certifications. He is also a CISSP. Dennis received his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from the University of Maryland.


  • Kermit Russell
  • Kermit is a Sr. Systems Analyst supporting the SEWP Security Center and the SEWP Production network. He's co-authored the SEWP Risk Assessment, SEWP Security Plan, and the SEWP IT Security Contingency Plan. Kermit has participated in The Open Group Secure Messaging Challenge. He has 14 years experience in Information Systems, 10 years directly in Systems Engineering. Kermit currently holds vendor certifications as a Solaris Certified System Administrator (SCSA), Solaris Certified Network Administrator (SCNA), Oracle Certified Database Administrator, Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA), Checkpoint Certified System Administrator (CCSA), and Checkpoint Certified System Expert (CCSE). He’s an honor graduate from Strayer College with a degree in Computer Information Science.

Internship Program:
  • Aaron Powell
  • Aaron Powell is a Master's student at Johns Hopkins University studying information security from a technological and a policy-oriented perspective.  He holds undergraduate degrees in anthropology as well as computer science from Washington University in St. Louis.  Aaron researches identity management with relation to new federal standards.  He also analyzes the security features of forthcoming COTS products.


  • Christopher Vincent
  • Christopher Vincent is presently working towards a Masters Degree in Security Informatics at Johns Hopkins University. Having completed a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science at Georgia Tech, he is currently interested in network security, identity management, security policy, and the severity of realized security and privacy breaches. At SEWP Security Center, Chris is currently researching best practices for securing remote access, enforcing strong user passwords, and remote auditing of system configurations across multiple platforms.

Distinguished Alumni of the SEWP Security Center Internship Program:
  • Ilya Burdman
  • Mr. Ilya Burdman possesses extensive experience in a wide variety of security mechanisms including cryptography, authentication, grid computing initiatives, and identity management work completed during his time at NASA SEWP. While working directly for Mr. Dennis Taylor (Director of NASA SEWP Security Center), Mr. Burdman fostered the exchange of new ideas regarding diverse topics in the Information Systems Security arena. In addition to his Computer Science degree from the University of Maryland, with a concentration on cryptography and general security topics, Mr. Burdman received a Masters Degree from Johns Hopkins University in Security Informatics, completing a thesis on information assurance of Federal Information Systems. While working on his degree, Mr. Burdman served as a senior systems administrator and a security professional for NASA SEWP Information Technology team.

    Currently, Mr. Burdman is employed as a senior consultant by BearingPoint Inc., a 3 billion dollar multi-national consultancy firm. He is responsible for certification and accreditation efforts for federal information systems, including the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Department of Justice (DOJ). Mr. Burdman holds several certifications, including Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Cisco Network Associate (CCNA), and Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP).   • Paul D'Avilar
  • Paul D'Avilar is a master's student at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, studying Security Informatics/Computer Science. His research interests are network security, digital forensics, privacy, database design.  Paul earned a B.S. in Computer Engineering with a special interest in Software Engineering and Information Security from Polytechnic University in New York.


  • Scott He
  • Scott He joined the NASA SEWP Security Center with great interest and hope in the area of Identity Management and Secure Messaging.  These interests in Information Security were nurtured, while completing his Bachelor degree from Penn State, and, matured, as Scott is currently finishing a Masters degree in Security Informatics at Johns Hopkins University at the end of 2005.  Some alluring topics of interest during his stay are: Identity Management (IdM) in conjunction with The Open Group, Tripwire for Servers and Network Devices, PKI and other asymmetric encryption related concerns and implementation, Zero-Knowledge proof usages, Sender-ID and S/MIME Gateway Certification, and challenges from usages of Toolkits.  Scott is proud and excited to be involved with the excellent group of talents here at SEWP.  When not pestering Dennis with IPSec questions, Scott reads his email at scotthe@gmail.com .


  • Juil Martin
  • Juil Martin is currently interning at NASA SEWP Security Center. She is working towards a Master's degree in Systems & Computer Science and a CAS in Computer Security at Howard University. She recently acquired her Bachelor's of Science degree in Systems & Computer Science at Howard University.  Her interests are in Quality Assurance Engineering and Cryptanalysis.  She is currently working with Open Group to build a vendor list in the Identity Management (IDM) space that will capture the feature sets of each product such as deployment and compatibility.


  • Erika McCallister
  • Erika McCallister is working towards a Masters degree in Security Informatics at Johns Hopkins University. She recently completed her law degree (JD) at Wake Forest University, and she also holds a Masters degree in Systems Analysis from Miami University. Her research interests focus primarily on security and privacy. She recently completed a FAQ to clarify the provisions of Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 201.


  • Steven Posnack
  • Steven Posnack is a recent graduate ('05) of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore were he completed a unique dual Master's program in Information Security and Health Policy. During his tenure at Johns Hopkins he attended the Whiting School of Engineering's Information Security Institute and the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a National Science Foundation Scholarship for Service recipient and will be working for the federal government for the next few years. His interests include: the security, privacy and policy of electronic health records; the creation and implementation of standards for digital health systems; the application/insertion of information security principles into health policy legislation; identity management, computer forensics, and trust based systems. Steven assisted with SEWP SC's move to building 25 from building 28 on the Greenbelt campus and was an intern during the summer of 2004. As an intern he conducted experiments with Internet Security Systems Proventia A201 Intrusion Detection System (IDS), and Tripwire among other tangential assignments.


  • Adam Shuchart
  • "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." - Issac Newton

    Adam Schuchart, is a full time student for the past several years. He has always enjoyed the sciences and problem solving, which is why he chose a technical career path. Adam is privileged to work with a talented group of people here at SEWP, he is always learning something new about the technical field since working here. Adam holds a bachelor degree in computer science with mathematics minor and is currently attaining a master degree in Information Security and Policy from John Hopkins University. Adam contributes most of his success to his faith and to the support of family and friends. It been that support that has gotten him to where he is today. The success in Adam's life is through the help and guidance by others, that is why the quote above is one of his favorites. The path in life is still not fully defined, just taking one step at a time to see where the journey goes.
